Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying these medications should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
